Egypt is the setting for this collection, but these stories by Anne-Marie Drosso are universal - whether it's the girl whose mother no longer recognises her, a young man who uses the changing political climate to avenge his despotic father, or the woman consumed by guilt for abandoning her children.

More Information

All the characters, in V.S. Pritchett's words, «look for the silent moment in which our singularity breaks through, when emotions change, without warning, and reveal themselves.» And while revealing themselves they also unveil the scents and sensations of Cairo, from the early fifties to the present day.

Essential reading, not only for those with a love of this intriguing city but for those who cherish the story, unobtrusively and beautifully rendered.

«A beautiful portrait of life in Egypt. I strongly recommend it.» - Alaa al Aswany, author of The Yacoubian Building

«These elegant, unadorned narratives of Egyptians at home and at large are as variegated as the city from which they take their name. They span classes, continents and decades with confidence and humour. We are in the company of a hugely promising and individual talent.» - Aamer Hussein, author of Insomnia

Anne-Marie Drosso was born in Cairo in 1951. She moved to British Columbia, Canada in 1974 where, after studying then teaching economics, she completed a law degree and worked for an administrative tribunal. She now lives in London and is working on a novel.
